Have always been a huge “Joe” fan and to hear of his difficulties pains me deeply.
Even back several years as a white Australian who is only a relatively young man compared to “Joes era” and shares a birthday with Muhammad Ali, I dually got interested in him(Ali) & by proxy found out about Joe Frazier.
Before this topic received the light of day to a “modern audience” through documentaries such as the excellent “When We Where Kings” & the more recent & salutory “Thrilla in Manilla” I had developed an interest in these outstanding fighters .
Lets face it boxing fans, and any fans of triumph over human adversity in general -”Smokin Joe” should’nt have been in any way “Heavyweight Champion of the World”.
Now as the cry’s of discontent go up, let me explain please…..
He was outweighed by them all(usually 204 – 214 pounds fighting weight vs 220 & beyond – normal for Heavyweights), he was outreached by them all,he was dwarfed by them all, usually giving up at least a foot or more in height & he was virtually blind in one eye(watch the documentary “Thrilla in Manilla” to see the stated facts), but no matter what, he “KEPT ON SMOKIN” he took five punches to give a devastating “ONE” and if that is’nt courage than I don’t know what is. Every day we watch garbage movies scripted by idiot wrtiters starring inane Hollywood actors (Paid Millions of Dollars by the way) depicting “Courage” – watch the “Thrilla In Manilla”documetary if u want 2 see what “real” courage & grit is all about(Joe & Ali)than watch this fight if u can stand it in it’s full version – yeah “Joe” “IS” realy dying out there…(real blood, real cuts, real bruises,eyes closed,… perhaps cerebral damage & obvious pain & suffering type dying ..did he really know what the effects would be long term type doubts…in that 14th round…. (this ain’t no Hollywood movie)yet his pride,his will,his spirit,his determination does not let him fall or just give up(even when he was pumelled by a giant young George Foreman years earlier(one of the hardest punches of all time) the ref had to stop it because “Joe” just would not quit. He was the greatest champion of all time in my humble view – he just could’nt sell it in a modern world of hype – nor would I guess would he want too.. in his inevitable warrior way. Unlike Ali(who deserves his greatness dues too – don’t get me wrong)Joe Frazier is not given the Icon status of so many hero’s. This is disgraceful and indicative of how we have negated reality for fantasy today (there is a statue to “Rocky” for god’s sake in Philly but not Joe Frazier) – everyone knows who “Spiderman” is, but does hardly anyone know the story of “SMOKIN JOE” – In my humble opinion what a sad indictment of those who manage his affairs & a society in general – People, find out your history,love,respect and cherish ur “REAL” heroes before it’s too late ….. peace always ~ Anthony

Yeah my name is Jac Trimble and I had the pleasure of playing with Mike at CFS my senior year. It was really fun to have a dominant player in our conference. We were a bold team, competing at levels that probably everyone around us, even our peers, would have thought impossible. We traveled to the Boys Club of New York tournament that year, we had scrimmages against local public high schools, and one of the best memories I have (and scary haha) was playing against Chester High. We lost that game but just to have been in the gym with a team that prides itself so much on its basketball skills was such a great experience. I remember when Mike was getting asked where he wanted to go and play high level basketball. We were so happy for him and I was glad that he chose a closer to home college. Temple has surely been amazing for him and I wish him the best of luck in the future.

Look, I am aware there are people who are able to merely up and stop smoking, but there are many other people that definitely have the most difficult time trying to give up smoking pot. This is in response to the Feb. 9th article regarding the Temple VITA site. The site is managed by The Campaign for Working Families and this is the first year that the site has actually been located in the heart of Temple’s campus. We are fortunate to have the support of Shirley Moy, Associate Director for the Center for Social Policy and Community Development, as well as the Temple students and community at the tax site. The Campaign manages ten other free tax preparation sites in Philadelphia that are open to the public. We prepare taxes, encourage savings opportunities, and for the first time now offer customers assistance in applying for FAFSA and other benefit programs. Unfortunately, in early February and the last two weeks of the tax season there is more demand for our services than we can handle. We are forced to turn away potential customers or some of our customers wait for hours for service. All of the tax preparers at our sites volunteer their time, and spend hours preparing and passing the IRS tax certification test. With their time and support, we save our customers thousands of dollars in tax preparation fees and they often receive significant refunds in the thousands of dollars. Our volunteers get the satisfaction of knowing that their time and effort has allowed them to enrich the lives of others and to make The Campaign for Working Families’ Philadelphia VITA program a reality.

Hello? Anybody in there? Not leaving a tip is not breaking the law. Get a clue.. better yet, educate yourself about the nature of the profession you chose. I do leave a tip when I go out to eat but due to the sour economy, I have become a cheap skate so I order food to go . That way, I can still get a great meal without having to tip. Works great in my favor. So, you see, I cannot afford to tip these days but I can still afford take out.
So, ten percent is a waste of your time? Giving you even 10% is a waste of my money you ingrate.
If my card was ever charged for more than I tipped, you bet your ass I would file charges for fraud.How can you even think that is okay? Also, How many restaurant owners would be happy to turn away a customer because that customer was not going to leave a 20% or more tip? As long as the customer pays for what he/she ate/drank… there is no theft of service.

I think part of the problem is that feminism today has split. There is certainly a form of feminism that you refer to, that both men and women can identify with, and this form is still very much alive in the hearts of people across the nation. Unfortunately, there is a second far more visible branch that has taken the word feminism and redefined it as man hating. Such people as Catherine Comins stating that young men could benefit from being falsely accused of rape fuel this definition and cause women and men alike to begin to pull away from the word feminism, even though they still agree with a large part of the original principals.

A person who cannot legally buy a handgun in PA cannot legally buy a handgun in FL. That is pure rubbish. First of all, the federal background check is the same everywhere. Secondly, you must be a resident of the same state where the final transferring FFL is located. If a PA resident sees a handgun he wants in a FL gun store, the FL gun store must sent it to a PA gun store to complete the background check. Now if you’re talking about somebody who is going to ILLEGALLY buy a gun, then all bets are off because that person is breaking the law so how would more gun laws stop then?

I went to school with Glenn from 7th to 12th grade and spent a lot of time with him in school. He was always involved in so much socially and in the arts. He was so great to talk to and had a wonderful and intellectual sense of humor that I loved. Everything I have read here sounds just like him. It warms my heart that he devoted his life and his studies to those who are discriminated against and whose contributions in life are undervalued. I did have brief contact with him through email during his time at Temple. In his poetic way he let me know about his condition and that he really didn’t have the time or energy to devote to anyone other than those in his life at tht time. The brilliance of his words left me filled with understanding and compassion for him and for those who were destined to say goodbye to a great friend, brother and son.

The current interest rate formula for lenders holding student loan assets produces a yield of approximately 2.00% The difference between the stated loan rate to the borrower (6.80% – 2.00% = 4.80%) is rebated to the US Department of Education (USDE). Direct Loans made by USDE also charge 6.80% but they don’t rebate anyone. It would appear that the USDE is getting way richer than any bank. They just call it ’savings’.

I agree, the peer mentor position seems to be the same duties as an RA. Considering that whether an RA or peer mentor they will be living with residents and will presumably receive the same training, why not just add more RA’s or compensate the current RA’s better. Many RA’s feel under-compensated for the responsibilities given to them, forcing them to also have second or third job. Allowing their position as a Resident Assistant to be their only job could make them more effective reaching their residents.

I don’t really see the reason most people have for attacking the plastic surgery industry. There are extremes like Montag, but most people are not like Montag. If someone has seen a therapist about their body issues and are still not satisfied, sometimes plastic surgery is a great thing for them. Other times, like Montag, they will never be satisfied by surgery because there is something deeper within the person which must be evaluated. In general, I support plastic surgery’s benefits. You shouldn’t always have to accept who you are as you are… if we have the ability to change ourselves, so why not do it?

Kelly, why are you the one bringing race into it. Temple University is the most diverse university in the country according to the Princeton Review. It is also located in Philadelphia’s worst neighborhood. It would not be a surprise to find black players here, or on any court. Look at Villanova University which is located in one of the wealthiest zip codes in the country. Their student body is mainly white (hence the nick-name “VanillaNova”), and their court is dominated by mainly blacks. Are you saying Villanova is racist. Kelly, uneducated people like you will continue to perpetuate racism with your ignorance.

Also, you should perceive Chaney’s comments about Calipari as a joke. The two have since made up, and have also fundraised together in the past. In fact, Calipari became good friends with Bill Cosby during his days in the A10 at UMass. As you know Cosby is a temple grad.

Calipari raised one million for Haiti…media stunt. Called by Obama? Media Stunt. And he didn’t raise it by himself, individuals raised it..he just gets credit for being organizer. Plus, he’s loaded so he should give back.

@Hilton – He never went deep? Are you serious? Sure, he never went to the Final Four, but he went to the Elite 8 on 5 separate occasions without the elite recruits that one could get at Kentucky, Kansas, UNC, etc. I know that the Elite 8 isn’t the Final Four, but to suggest that he never went deep in the tourney simply isn’t fair. He also won over 500 games at Temple (over 700 games total), and while at Temple, he played the most difficult out-of-conference schedule possible, year in and year out. Plus, his matchup zone was so complex that the vast majority of college coaches could barely figure it out. Look at the way that Temple led in team defense and turnover ratio, year in and year out during his tenure. Let’s not pretend that John Chaney was some sort of second-rate coach. Very few coaches have his kind of credentials.

Was he crude in public? Sure. But he never had an incident abusing a player a la Bobby Knight. None of John Chaney’s players have said a bad word about him. All of them who have spoken publicly about Chaney have suggested that he was a father figure who taught them the value of hard work, dedication, etc. 5:45 AM practices apparently served their purpose. Far from hated, Chaney is beloved, both by his players and by the majority of Philadelphia’s college basketball fans.

Chris & Mike P, John Chaney and Bobby Knight are two of a kind. They know basketball, but are about the poorest example of a coach that ever put a team on the floor. I guess they think they be rude, vulgar, nasty, stupid, and a lot of other things I can’t list is being a good person/coach is what it takes, then I understand why they will die a hated old men. As far as Chaney coaching, his record doesn’t speak very well for him. He never went very deep in the Final Four Tour. so how can he be such a good coach. Now as for Tubby Smith, he got lazy and didn’t do much for KY on the last. When he was ask to make some changes he left. Now as you can see he hasn’t done much where he is.

Kentucky will get to the Sweet 16 or Elite 8 before falling to a half-decent team. Wall is a great player, but that only gets you so far in March.

John Chaney is a coaching legend who took his teams to the Elite Eight 5 times. He did not get the cream of the crop players, he had mainly the blue collard players, but still managed to have award winning teams. As for John Calipari, the man is a media whore who loves attention. And it was great to see Kentucky lose.

This kind of bands is not really representative for japanese music. This “visual rock” has more to do with superficial desguise than with music. Take them their gothic clothes and colored hairs off, and what will stay? Almost nothing. And KISS has invented this genre a while ago before them…

It’s true that these little bands, often unknown in Japan, are cheaper than big bands like B’z, so they can be invited and come easier than big bands. But bands like B’z stay the true musical bands in Japan that people interested in japanese music should look for and discover.

American musician know B’z for a long time: Steve Vai has invited the band on his album “The Ultra Zone” in 1999. B’z is the first and only asian band you can find in Los Angeles on the Boulevard RockWalk since 2007. And recently Slash and the singer of B’z, Koshi Inaba, did a song together, SAHARA, for the Slash solo project “Slash & Friends”.

Even if Aerosmith is an influence and if the two bands have played together in 2002 in Japan, B’z wouldn’t just be a “japanese Aerosmith”. They’re more than that. I can just encourage to discover this amazing rock band from Japan where people are not always being disguised or dressed up when they want to sing or play music!

Sadly, work gets stolen all the time on the Internet. Reprocessed news is a big reason traditional media are taking a nosedive.

Since Brian is in Philadelphia and the other site is based in the Philippines, he is the most likely the victim in this bit of plagiarism.

As for the show, it reminded this former resident of what he misses about Philadelphia. The Fishtown residents I knew were rough-and-tumble but they had amazing character. I miss the place.

I have a Gouache by Roger Anliker entitled “Mage” which is dated 1973. It was Shown at “The Renaissance Revisited” 7 OCT – 7 Nov 1982 Tyler Galleries at Temple University.

Also at a group show at the Rosenfeld Gallery in Philadelphia December 1982.

The Picture was bequeathed to me in December of 1989. I ejoy this work every day and it is one of my prized possessions.

I’d like to know more about Roger Anliker and why he was considered the devil?

I am biased because my family owns this restaurant, but it really is a great place that is pretty inexpensive and has a great atmosphere. It’s cheap enough for students on a budget, especially with it being a BYOB.

The sixers still aren’t a contender with Iverson. He needs the ball to do everything, and the sixers can’t be a team like that anymore. They should strive for losses so we can pick up some elite talent in the draft. No more athletic guys with upside. NBA ready talent. We should have drafted Ty Lawson this year, I can’t believe you wouldn’t mention something like that in your article. Lou Williams wasn’t good enough to be a starter, and Jrue can’t learn from him.
