Tina Fey to receive award from SMC

Fey will speak on Main Campus in October. She had established a scholarship in the journalism department in March.

The Emmy Award-winning comedian Tina Fey will receive the Lew Klein Excellence in the Media Award at a ceremony on Main Campus this fall, the university said in a statement on Thursday.

Fey will be the 16th recipient to receive the award, which is named after Lew Klein, the current chair of the School of Media and Communication’s Board of Visitors, and celebrates outstanding members of the media.

Fey is best known for her roles on the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live and for creating the series 30 Rock, which was also broadcast on NBC.

Fey, who was raised in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, did not attend Temple, but her brother Peter graduated from the School of Media and Communication in 1984. In March, the Fey siblings established a scholarship in Temple’s journalism department to honor their late father Donald, who received a journalism degree from Temple in 1966.

Fey also dedicated the film “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” to her father, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The awards ceremony will be held in Mitten Hall on October 7, where Fey will also address students at an exclusive “Conversation with Students” reception.

Past winners include Anderson Cooper, Whoopi Goldberg and Wolf Blitzer.
