Committees recommend housing price increases

Morgan Hall is expected to increase operating expenses by more than $16 million.

The Student Affairs Committee and Campus Life and Diversity Committee of the Board of Trustees recommended Tuesday an average increase of 3.12 percent in all university student housing for fiscal year 2013-2014.

The proposal comes as the new Morgan Hall complex is projected to increase annual operating expenses by $16,578,946 in fiscal year 2014.

The proposed increase rates ranged from no increase for standard rooms – Johnson, Hardwick and Peabody – to 6percent increases for single spaces. The committees also recommended increasing Graduate Housing by 3 percent.

University Housing and Residential Life expects meal plans rates charged to students to increase by 2.6 percent as Sodexo Corporation is expected to increase its charges for food preparation.
