Longtime athletics supporter Chodoff dies

Temple alum Peter Chodoff, who the football team’s practice field is named after, died on Monday evening at the age of 91.

On Monday evening, Peter Chodoff died at the age of 91, the university announced Tuesday.

Chodoff, a 1947 College of Science and Technology alum, was on the Executive board for the Owl Club and Legends Society, which is for donors who have contributed $100,000 or more to Temple athletics.

The football team’s practice field—Chodoff Field—is also named after Chodoff.

“This is a very sad day for all of Temple University, not just athletics,” Director of Athletics Pat Kraft said in a university-issued statement. “Doc Chodoff was a beloved man who gave his heart and soul in support of all Temple student-athletes. His generosity was at the highest level and his passion for Temple was unmatched. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time. He will be deeply missed.”

“Amongst all the great people that have been around to help athletics, Dr. Chodoff was—there’s probably none greater,” coach Matt Rhule said after Tuesday’s practice. “Our field’s named after him, but it’s so much more than that—his interactions with our team, traveling on every trip, being a friend, being a person who believed in us. He will be greatly missed.”

Chodoff also contributed to help fund the training/hydrotherapy facilities during the expansion of Edberg-Olson Hall in 2012.

Chodoff is survived by his partner, Joan Saltzer, his son Louis, daughter Carole and two grandchildren, Alaina and Tony.

A memorial service for Chodoff will be held Friday at 1:00 pm at Platt Memorial Chapel in Cherry Hill, N.J.
