Student dies after New Year’s Day triple shooting

The student was shot after an argument in the Tioga section of the city, according to police.

A Temple student is dead after a triple shooting Tuesday morning in the Tioga section of the city, police said.

At approximately 3:40 a.m. on Tuesday, Stephen Johnson, 23, was shot in the chest in a house on the 1700 block of West Venango Street and taken to Temple University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:04 a.m. Johnson was a senior business major in the Fox School of Business, Assistant Vice President for University Communications Ray Betzner said.

The second victim, a 22-year-old man, was shot twice in the chest and once in the foot and remained in critical condition at Temple Hospital Wednesday night, police said. Another 22-year-old man was shot in the foot and taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center in stable condition.

Lawrence Jeffries, 22, of Glenside, Pa., was arrested Wednesday in connection with the shooting and charged with murder and related offenses, police said. Police said an argument was believed to be the motive for the incident.
