University names The Seattle Times’ editor dean of SMC

Boardman will become SMC dean on Sept. 1.

Temple announced Wednesday night that David Boardman, executive editor and senior vice president of The Seattle Times, will become the dean of the School of Media and Communication effective Sept. 1.

Boardman, who has been at The Seattle Times since 1983, was at the helm when the paper won two Pulitzer Prizes in 2010 and 2012, according to the paper’s website. President Neil Theobald praised Boardman for his work at the paper.

“This is a time of profound change in the world of media and communication. David Boardman understands these changes, because he navigated a leading media organization through this period of convergence and new technology,” Theobald said in a statement. “We want Temple students to be real-world ready. To produce tomorrow’s intellectual and industry leaders in media and communication, SMC needs a real-world-tested hand at the helm. That’s David.”

Boardman is a graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and holds a graduate degree from the University of Washington. He is the president of the American Society of News Editors and next year will become the president of the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

“I am fortunate to be going from one of the best jobs in journalism to one of the best in media and communication education,” Boardman said in a statement. “The values of Temple University and this school are precisely the values to which I have dedicated my journalism career: public service, social justice and the essential role of communication in our democracy.”

Boardman is taking over for interim dean Thomas Jacobson, who has served in that role since 2009. Jacobson, Boardman and two other candidates were in the running for the position.
