Help pick next mayor

Students should vote to have a say in Philadelphia politics.

Next week, The Temple News will report on the final debate for the city’s 2015 mayoral election, an event all students, faculty and Philadelphia community members should pay attention to.

The event, held Monday at 6:30 p.m. in Temple’s Performing Arts Center, will feature Democratic candidate Jim Kenney and Republican candidate Melissa Murray Bailey debating issues of the city’s business and economic development.

Still highly trending, though, on the city’s most important issues, is education, primarily for men and women of parental age, and secondly, students. Millenials, a group philly.com defined as 18 to 34-year-olds, are the highest group of registered voters in Philadelphia at around 321,342.  Only 12 percent, though, turned out in May’s primary election.

Kenney aims to increase the number of summer internships and apprenticeship programs from 10,000 to 16,000, a philly.com article reported. Bailey has said her main priority is to “make people employable,” through both public and higher education levels.

While Governor Tom Wolf and many prominent Philadelphians publicly supported  Kenney, the outcome is not yet set in stone. By deciding to vote, students can have a voice in Philadelphia politics.

Registration for the event is free and open to the public and will be streaming live through the WHYY site and broadcasted again at 10 p.m.
