Butler scores late to beat women’s soccer

Butler scores in the 87th minute to stun the Owls.

The women’s soccer team dropped the first match of the weekend road trip at Butler in a 2-1 loss on Friday, Oct. 19.

“We competed tonight, but we made some simple, silly mistakes,” coach Matt Gwilliam said.

Butler got on the board first with a 28th minute goal by freshman midfielder Sophia Maccognone, her ninth of the season.

Down 1-0, Temple responded with a goal of its own nearly 10 minutes later, as freshman midfielder Paige Rachel notched her second goal of the season in the 38th minute, evening the score.

Temple entered the second half with four shots, while Butler recorded five shots in the first half. In the second half, the Bulldogs notched nine shots, while the Owls did not record another shot after the first half.

“I thought we defended well and we had our opportunities but so did [Butler],” Gwilliam said.

Both the Bulldogs and the Owls were locked at 1-1 through the first 42 minutes of the second, but it was Butler that prevailed with the late goal minutes before a potential overtime period.

Butler freshman midfielder Sophia Maccognone notched her second goal of the match and her tenth goal of the season in the 87th minute, securing the win for the Bulldogs.

The Butler defense was “alright” in Friday’s match, according to coach Gwilliam. Although the Owls were able to play solid defense in the match, it was the simple mistakes that cost Temple the match, Gwilliam added.

With the loss, the Owls fall to 5-10-2 on the season (2-4-0 in Atlantic 10 conference), while the Bulldogs improve to 9-4-3 on the year (3-1-2 in A-10).

On the road this season, Temple has compiled a 2-6-1 record, while Butler added to their home field record of 7-1-2.

The Owls will have a second chance this weekend to grab an A-10 conference win as they will visit Saint Louis on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m.
