Cummings makes history against South Florida

The senior guard’s 19 points moved him past the 1,000-point mark as the Owls beat South Florida 61-48.

Will Cummings showed how valuable he has been to Temple in his career, as the Owls overcame a poor-shooting first half to pick up a road win against South Florida.

In the process, the senior guard accomplished a personal milestone as well.

Temple (16-7, 7-3 American Athletic Conference) knocked off USF (7-16, 1-9 The American) in a 61-48 win despite its poor shooting. Cummings scored a game-high 19 points, with 13 coming in the second half, to lead the way for the Owls.

After hitting a free throw in the waning minutes of the game, he crossed the 1,000-point threshold. He is the 50th player in program history to accomplish the feat.

The Owls’ lack of offensive production was largely due to shooting percentage, as the team turned the ball over seven times, and played the first 15 minutes of the second half without a turnover. However, Temple shot 35.6 percent from the field, and missed 16 of its 22 attempts from three-point range.

The unkind iron also befell on the Bulls. Despite its poor shooting continuing at the free throw line (59 percent), the Owls out-shot USF from the field, the 3-point line, and the foul stripe.

Corey Allen Jr., the conference’s second leading scorer, got off to a hot start, at one point scoring nine USF points in a row in the first half. While he finished with a team-high 16 points, 12 came before intermission.

Temple was down 24-23 at halftime, but took a 27-26 lead on a Devontae Watson hook-shot, and never trailed the remainder of the game.

Junior forward Jaylen Bond continued to lead the team – and conference – in rebounding. Bond hauled in a team-high nine rebounds, including 6 on the offensive end. Despite USF’s Ruben Guerrero collecting a game-high 14 rebounds, Temple still managed to out-rebound the Bulls on the offensive end.

Cummings’ career accomplishment was the story of the game, as he crosses the 1,000-point threshold for the 50th time in Temple history. This came despite Cummings scoring 29 points his freshman year.
