Drexels hands Owls eighth-straight loss

Coach Marybeth Freeman’s squad fell 3-2 to Drexel University Sunday at Buckley Field.

The Owls lost their eighth consecutive game Sunday, falling to Drexel University 3-2.

On a cold, rainy Sunday afternoon at Buckley Field, the Dragons’ Mary Lynam scored on a penalty corner to break a 2-2 tie with eight minutes remaining. The loss was the Owls’ third-consecutive one-goal loss.

Temple (3-12, 0-2 Big East Conference) had nineteen shots, seven on target, compared to Drexel’s four shots.

“We didn’t deserve to win that game,” coach Marybeth Freeman said. “When you have that many opportunities up front, you have to be able to finish.”

Drexel scored on its first penalty corner two minutes into the game. Eight minutes later, redshirt-sophomore forward Sarah Keer tied the game at 1-1 off a pass from redshirt-sophomore forward Sarah Deck.

The Owls trailed 2-1 at halftime, but tied it up for a second time 12:06 into the second half as senior forward/midfielder Erin VanHorn deflected a shot in by freshman defender/midfielder Hattie Kuhns.

“I felt that we dominated the entire game., Freeman said. “Our press was fantastic. We were able to come up with balls, but when you come up with balls and not get something out of it, that’s where things get a little frustrating.”

Temple will take on Old Dominion University Tuesday. The Monarchs are currently ranked No. 11 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association coaches poll.

“When it comes to our conference games it becomes more of a rival game.” coach Freeman said. “Anything can happen on any given day, I’m a strong believer of that.”
