Fencing has strong showing at Sacred Heart Invitational

Owls finished 3-1 in their most recent meet.

The fencing team competed in the Sacred Heart Invitational on Sunday, going 3-1. Foil, who went 4-0 overall, was led by sophomore Demi Antipas and freshman Kristen Kemnitzer, who both went undefeated individually as well. Sophomore foil Fatima Largaespada also had a strong day, going 8-1.

“I think we did well,” coach Nikki Franke said. “I think every match had its challenges and we handled most of them as I had expected. I think we can see the things we need to work on and we have to understand that every match and every school is going to be a challenge and we have to be up to that challenge.”

Kemnitzer and Antipas were two of the four undefeated individual fencers for the Owls, the other two being senior sabre Andrea Haley and freshman sabre Victoria Suber.

Antipas topped off her performance by securing the foil squad’s 5-4 win over Harvard with a victory in her final bout.

“It was a very good win for us,” Franke said. “The girls were very focused and they fenced hard and fenced very well. Harvard has a very good team and it was good to see that we lived up to that challenge.”

At the dual meet, the team’s first of the year, the Owls secured wins over Vassar, New York University and Sacred Heart. The loss came to nationally ranked Harvard.

Epee squad was led by sophomore Jessica Hall who went 5-1, while freshman Rachael Clark went 5-2. Junior sabre Lauren Rangel-Friedman went 6-1, which was the most win for the sabre squad. Sophomore Petra Khan went 3-2.

“I think what impressed me the most for our first meet was…that we really stuck together and supported each other and worked to help each other and that was a good start for us,” Franke said.

The Owls next meet is the Penn State Invitational, which will not be until Jan. 12. The Owls host their annual Alumna Meet the day before.
