Golf team finishes 13th

The Owls finished second to last at the AutoTrader.com Golf Classic in Duluth, Georgia.

The Owls finished 13th in the 14-team field at the AutoTrader.com Golf Classic in Duluth, Georgia.

Senior Brandon Matthews finished tied for 29th with a 3-over par 219. He was the lone Owl to finish in the Top 50 of the 88-person field. Redshirt freshman John Barone and freshman Trey Wren finished tied for 65th, both shooting a 12-over par 228.

Freshman Sam Soeth and sophomore Evan Thornton finished tied for 69th and tied for 81st, respectively.

“It’s terrible,” Matthews said of the team’s scores. “These kids can’t be shooting these scores. It’s not good at all. We absolutely cannot do this.”

Coach Brian Thornton said Thornton, who had a 77.9 stroke average in 30 rounds last season, needs to improve his play.

“He’s really struggled since he’s been here,” Quinn said. “He always figures out a way to kind of get in the lineup, but he doesn’t really get it done when he’s in the lineup. I’m probably going to go another direction this week. I’m not sure yet. He needs to get a touch more organized.”

Matthews said he is disappointed in how the team has played in 2015.

Along with the 13th place finish Tuesday, the Owls finished 12th, 10th, 5th and 20th in their other four tournaments this fall.

“These kids really need to realize how much hard work needs to be put in and in the past couple weeks from what I’ve heard and seen, I don’t think they’ve been putting in the work that’s necessary,” Matthews said. “They’re games just aren’t where they should be. It’s not like we’re coming off of a winter. These kids should have been playing competitive golf over the summer. I honestly don’t have an answer right now why these scores are so high.”
