Gymnastics takes third at Towson

Balance beam once again Temple’s strongest event.

At the Towson Invite on Sunday, women’s gymnastics came in third place behind Cornell and host Towson and defeated conference rival Ursinus. The Owls total team score of 190.600.

Leading the way for Temple was senior Jean Alban. Alban placed second in the all-around with a score of 38.100. In the process, Alban turned in the highest score of the day on balance beam, scoring a 9.725 on the apparatus.

Junior Brittanie DeMeno (37.650) and senior Alexis Arena (37.6) also competed in all four events and placed third and fourth in the all-around, respectively. DeMeno, the reigning ECAC Gymnast of the Week, competed best on the floor exercise with her 9.700. While Arena had her best score of the day on balance beam with a 9.625.

The beam lineup once again stood out as the best event for Temple. With a lineup score of 48.100, Temple was second on the apparatus among the four schools, while it placed third in each of the other three events.

Coach Aaron Murphy was pleased with his team’s performance, but singled out the performances on balance beam and floor exercise as being the most effective.

“Our beam team didn’t count any falls,” Murphy said. “We didn’t count any falls and we scored a 48.100, which was awesome.”

“Then we moved over to the floor exercise and we had pretty much our whole team hit, and the top five scores ended up totaling a 48.525, so that ended up being really good,” Murphy added.

Sophomore Alexandra Forcucci was not in action today. Forcucci stayed home with an undisclosed ailment and her status for the next meet is unknown.

The Owls have next week off and will prepare for their upcoming tri-meet against Denver, and host West Virginia, Sunday, March 3. Competition begins at 2 p.m.
