Listabarth leads Owls to second place finish

Stephan Listabarth’s first-place finish at the Duquesne Duals Saturday helped the Owls place second in the team’s first race of the year.

Stephan Listabarth’s first race in the United States was memorable.

The junior transfer from the Medical University of Vienna, Austria helped the Owls finish second at the Duquesne Duals in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Saturday, finishing first a in the 8-kilometer race with a time of 26 minutes, nine seconds.

In the Owls’ opening race of the season, Listabarth and seniors Alex Izewski and Matt Kacyon, who finished fifth and ninth, respectively, were the lone Owls in the Top 10.

“Of course winning a race always gives you a confidence boost,” Lisbarth said. “But I think we all know that it is very early in the season and the real important races are ahead of us.”

Saturday’s race was Listbarth’s first as an Owl. His prior running experience in Austria has prepared him for college running.

“Since, intercollegiate sports barely exist in Austria, I was just a member of the local track club DSG Volksbank Wien,” Listabarth said.  “Therefore, my main competitions have been the junior and the senior national championships. I was able to win multiple championships at the junior level and one time at senior level. I also had the chance to represent Austria twice at the European Cross Country Championships.”

At the Duquesne Duals women’s race, Temple finished fifth overall with 108 points.

The sole Temple finisher in the Top 10 was freshman Maddie Bixler, who placed ninth with a time of 19:10.4. Sophomore Katie Pinson and freshman Alexis O’Shea finished 11th and 15th, respectively.

“The women’s team has a lot of newcomers,” Snyder said. “Many of them are freshmen. It’s a young team.”
