Mixed results for tennis

The women’s team split a pair of matches over the weekend, while the men’s team recorded a victory on Sunday.

The women’s tennis team had two matches this weekend, facing off against two city rivals. The Owls took on Penn on Saturday and Villanova on Sunday.

Temple opened the weekend dropping a 6-1 decision to Penn.

“I thought we came out really slow in doubles and we just weren’t aggressive enough and it carried over in singles,” coach Steve Mauro said.

However, the loss for Temple on Saturday seemed to spur an inspired performance on Sunday with a 7-0 blanking of Villanova.  Mauro said he believed his team learned from the beatdown it took against Penn and came out a better team against Villanova.

“We had a long talk after the match about what we needed to do,” Mauro said. “I just thought the girls stepped up and executed and the intensity level was good as well.”

The men’s team had one match this weekend, recording a 4-3 victory against Villanova.  Mauro said he believed it wasn’t a pretty win but his team got it done.

“The guys played and they did what they had to do to win today,” Mauro said.

The team transitioned to playing outdoors after playing the majority of the spring season indoors.  Mauro said this made things a little more complicated.

“I think playing outside in the cold was something we weren’t used to,” Mauro said.

“We were real happy that the guys got the win but we need to practice more outside in order to keep the momentum going,” Mauro added.  “At this point right now it’s just difficult judging how the weather’s going to be.”
