Owls allow multiple goals in loss

Temple loses to Delaware.

The Temple Owls lost to the Delaware Blue Hens 2-1 at Ambler Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.

After a scoreless half, Delaware (5-4) scored two consecutive goals in the second period. Temple (5-3-1) has now lost three of their four home games this season and have allowed multiple goals for the first time since 2012.

The Owls’ lone goal was scored by freshman midfielder Ingrid Mello, her third score of the season. Sophomore midfielder Kelly Farrell assisted on the goal.

Delaware’s senior midfielder Dianna Marinaro and senior forward Shannon Kearney netted the Blue Hens’ second half goals.

Sophomore goalkeeper Shauni Kerkhoff recorded six saves in the loss, while senior Jessica Levy earned the win and registered four saves in the process.

Neither team could create many scoring opportunities in the first period, but six minutes into the second half, Kearney found the back of the net for the first points of the game. In the 60th minute, Marinaro followed Kearney’s goal with a score of her own, giving the Blue Hens a 2-0 lead.

Temple responded to the unanswered run when Farrell assisted Mello for the Owls’ score which brought Temple within one goal.

The Owls saw their share of scoring chances late in the game, but Delaware blocked Temple’s shots and ended the Owls’ chance of a comeback.
