Second half dooms Temple

Owls lose as season draws to a close.

Going into their final two games of the season, the field hockey team was looking to finish strong.

 That goal disappeared on Friday when the Owls dropped their game against No. 18 Massachusetts by a final score of 4-1.

 In their first half, both teams struggled to muster up much offense, with each team taking only three shots apiece.

 The Minutewomen opened up the game in the beginning of the second half with a goal in the 39th minute by senior midfielder Kim Young.

 From Young’s goal on, Massachusetts never looked back.

 In the 43rd minute, freshman midfielder Noralie Weusthius scored an unassisted goal from the center of the circle.

 Young then struck again in the 50th minute with her second goal of the day off an assist by senior defender Callie Sweigart.

 With the Minutewomen up 3-0, coach Amanda Janney took out sophomore goalkeeper Lizzy Millen for sophomore Haley Mitchell.

 Millen allowed three goals and recorded only two saves in her 53 minutes of play.

 In the final minutes of the game, sophomore midfielder Nicole Kroener was able to score Temple’s only goal off an assist by senior midfielder Katie Briglia on a penalty corner.

 The Owls pulled the goalie in the final minute of the game, allowing freshman forward Courtney Spleen to score her first goal of the season.

 Temple wraps up regular season play on Sunday at noon against cross-town rival Saint Joseph’s (4-14).

 The game has been dubbed Katie Briglia Day to honor the Owls’ lone senior on the team.
