The Owls were recognized by the Philadelphia 76ers Sunday in its ongoing “HometownHeroes” series. During the first quarter intermission the team was presented an award in honor of its service to Philadelphia. This year, the team donated a total of $3,290 to the Fahmarr McElrathbey Trust Fund, as well as the Adam Taliaferro Foundation.

At the Annual Football Banquet last week, three players took home top honors. Redshirt sophomore center Alex Derenthal received the offensive Most Valuable Player award. Senior linebacker Walter Mebane earned the defensive MVP and explosive redshirt sophomore Travis Shelton notched the award on special teams.

FENCING

Several fencers left their marks at the National Intercollegiate Women’s Fencing Association Christmas Invitational in Newark, N.J., last weekend. Sophomore Nina Gernesova placed first in the Foil division, while junior Kristine Jones topped the Sabre competition. Junior Samantha Myles followed in Gernesova’s footsteps, placing second in a field of 45.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Temple alum and current NBA player Aaron McKie announced he is collecting gifts for underprivileged children of Philadelphia this holiday season. His AM8 Foundation has teamed up with the La Salle and Temple Athletic Departments, along with the 3rd Battalion 14th Marines of Philadelphia.

COACHES’ SHOW

This week kicks off the first edition of a new coaches’ show on 610 WIP-AM, starring men’s basketball coach Fran Dunphy and women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley. It will be taped live every Monday at the Draught Horse at 7 p.m.
