Mathis Harrison, a Clarion University
graduate, was named an assistant
coach to the track and field team last week. Formerly an assistant at Duquesne for two years, Harrison helped lead the Dukes’ men’s and women’s teams to their best Atlantic Ten Conference finish in program history. The women’s team finished second while the men’s team ranked third. Prior to his stint at Duquesne, Harrison was head coach and president of the International and River City Elite Track Clubs. While there, he helped breed numerous track standouts, including 18 regional champions and 12 National Junior Olympic All-Americans.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

On Friday, the women’s basketball
team defeated the New York/New Jersey Gazelles 78-65, in an exhibition match at McGonigle Hall. Led by an all-around effort from senior Kamesha Hairston, the Owls cruised to victory with solid shooting and rebounding. Hairston burned the Gazelles for 18 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots in 30 minutes. Sophomore Shenita Landry, who netted 14 points, and freshman LaKeisha Eaddy, who dished out a game-high seven assists, also came up big.

FENCING

At State College, Pa., the fencing
team competed in the Penn State Open, which was composed of a field of 55 in the foilist division and a field of 65 in the epee division. Freshman Melissa Parker battled her way through a bracket of players from around the country to place 6th in the foilist competition. In the epee division, junior Brianna Ferrera and freshman Kristin Howell highlighted the field for the Owls with 13th and 17th place markings, respectfully. The team’s next match is the National Intercollegiate Women’s Fencing Association Christmas Invitational on Dec. 3 in Teaneck, N.J.
