Volleyball wins at Memphis

Freshman Carolina Grattan and senior Elyse Burkert led the team in kills.

Temple beat Memphis on the road Friday night 3-1, as freshman Carolina Grattan and senior Elyse Burkert led the team with 14 and 15 kills respectively.

The Owls won the first set 25-18.  Temple had the upper hand in the second set as well, winning it 25-21 to take a 2-0 lead.

“We really made some good plays at the net and we were very aggressive hitting wise,” coach Bakeer Ganes said.

However, in the third set the momentum shifted to Memphis.  Temple had accumulated 20 kills to three errors in the first set, and 15 kills to six errors in the second set. The trend continued, as the Owls collected 10 kills to nine errors resulting in a 25-20 set to the Tigers.

“In the third set Memphis got a little bit stronger and put a little more pressure on us with their serves,” Ganes said. “We made some hitting errors but you have to give Memphis some credit for making plays.”

The fourth set had gone back and fourth most of the way, but the Owls came out on top 25-21 – taking the match.

“At the end of the match we just made plays,” Ganes said.

Coming off a Sunday win against Cincinnati, the Owls have won two straight conference matches.  They’ll look to make it three straight on Nov. 15 at SMU.

“Like every match we play in this conference it’s going to be a tough one,” Ganes said.
