Women’s tennis concludes play at Cissie Leary Invitational

The Owls went 1-2 on the tournament’s final day.

Sophomores Ama Osei and Rebecca Breland ended the Cissie Leary Invitational on a high note, defeating Dartmouth’s Janet Liu and Julienne Keong 9-7. The pair joined junior Alicia Doms, sophomore Yana Mavrina, junior Carly Bohman in competition on Sunday.

“We had to make adjustments, and we played smarter,” Osei said. “All we had to do was play smart, that’s the only reason we won.”

“We finished on a real positive note with Ama Osei and Rebecca Breland,” coach Steve Mauro said. “Considering they beat one of the top teams, I thought it was a great showing for Temple.”

Breland said she thinks that the success will continue.

“That was just a little taste of what’s next to come, over the rest of the season,” she said.

Junior Alicia Doms was unable to continue her run through the consolation bracket, falling 6-3, 6-1 to Nicole Pivonka of Drexel.

“I was a little disappointed,” Mauro said. “I think she was a little bit tired, that’s the reason why. We’re just not used to playing so many matches in a row.”

Doms was originally scheduled to play against Amber Washington of St. John’s, but Washington and Pivonka switched positions so Pivonka did not have to play Erin Bowsher, a fellow Dragon.

Sophomore Yana Mavrina and junior Carly Bohman lost their doubles match 8-5.

“Unfortunately Dartmouth was a little bit stronger,” Mauro said. “So we are going to use different combinations to figure out what works best, so we’ll be ready for January.”
