Youtz leads field hockey against La Salle

Sophomore forward Amber Youtz had a goal and an assist to lead the Owls to a 2-1 victory.

As the field hockey team earned its second Atlantic 10 Conference win of the season Friday, sophomore forward Amber Youtz continued her dominance.

On the back of Youtz, the Owls were able to sneak past cross-town rival La Salle by a final score of 2-1.

The sophomore forward scored an unassisted goal in the first five minutes of the game, putting her at 16 goals for the season. Youtz also had an assist that led to the game-winning goal.

But Youtz didn’t just help the field hockey team stay perfect in their conference, she also etched her name into the Temple record books.

With her goal and assist, Youtz’s season points total rose to 40, putting her in 10th place all time on the single-season points list for Temple.

In Friday’s win, the Owls came out strong in the first half.

After Youtz’s goal, Temple was able to hold the Explorers to only eight shots in the first half.

As the second period began, junior forward Lauren Hunt added to the Owls’ lead with a goal off an assist by Youtz.

But late in the second half, La Salle stormed back into the game on a goal by junior forward Olivia Shoemaker with only seven minutes remaining in regulation.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lizzy Millen was able to stop the Explorers late drive in the second half. Millen finished the game with seven saves.

On the offensive end, Temple outshot La Salle in the first half 12-8, but in the second half both teams had six shots each.

Temple’s penalty corner defense allowed zero goals on seven penalty corners, four of which came in the second half.

The Owls now improve to 9-6 on the season, and 2-0 in the A-10. Coach Amanda Janney and players couldn’t be reached for comment after the game.

Temple will be hosting Lock Haven at 1 p.m. at Geasey Field for their third A-10 matchup of the season on Sunday.
