In an age where students on college campuses become more apathetic to social issues,
the Temple students that traveled to Allentown on Dec. 6 to protest the hate-filled rhetoric of the Westboro Baptist Church are to be commended.

In a free society, perhaps now more than ever, sovereign participation in the democratic process is a victory for everyone. It is disconcerting that people still hold the views of the Westboro Baptist Church. It’s encouraging to know that Temple students were represented in the legions of counterdemonstrators in Allentown that day. Temple University has always been a conduit for populist ideology and equality in issues involving social justice. That day, the students did the school proud.

It’s everyone’s right, even our collective responsibility, to use our First Amendment rights more prudently than the demonstrators from Westboro Baptist Church did.
