50 Cent is a Jamaica, Queens-bred MC whose heavily publicized past and beef-stirring disposition has garnered an incredible amount of hype.

Eminem described him best with this verse: “Take some Big and some Pac / And you mix em up in a pot / Sprinkle a little Big L on top / What the fuck do you got?” Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ attempts to translate his colorful street life and “take no shorts”-personality onto wax.

On “Wanksta,” 50 claims, “this rap shit is so easy.”

The problem is, Get Rich is almost too easy.

50’s creativity doesn’t always reach beyond the standard fare.

The disc’s 19 tracks include countless gun-clapping, “Heat,” “Many Men,” lots of ice, “Poor Lil’ Rich”, club-ready “hoe-bizness,” “In Da Club,” “P.I.M.P.,” “21 Questions,” and the obligatory weed anthem, “High All The Time.”

His effortless flow and catchy hooks make for a great sell (50 will move units), but there’s little substance beyond the thug lifestyle.

While there’s no doubt 50 is one of “New York City’s own bad guy[s],” Get Rich is far from the best the city has to offer.
