After playing catch-up all game with Delaware today, the field hockey team dropped their fourth straight game in a physical 4-3 loss.
Freshman forward Alyssa Delp scored two goals for the Owls, and sophomore forward Amber Youtz added another goal as well.
“I was knocking on the door the whole first half,” Delps said about her two goals. “We just kept doing the same thing and finally it worked.”
Youtz’s goal puts her in first place in the Atlantic 10 Conference in goals scored this season. She also added an assist in today’s game, putting her tied for second in the conference for assists.
Three different players scored goals for Delaware, with sophomore defender Kelsey McKee leading the effort with two goals. McKee scored on two penalty corners.
Temple held the Blue Hens to only four penalty corners, but allowed goals on two attempts.
Coach Amanda Janney said that goals on corners killed them.
“We actually played a decent passing game today, that’s why it’s kind of frustrating that on the one day that we hold them to a few corners they score on them,” Janney said.
Janney also said that small mistakes were the main factor in today’s loss.
“We did a great job building the ball up to give us shooting opportunities, but the second [Delaware] would take a 16-yard hit, there’s a wide open girl dribbling down our middle,” Janney said. “Little things like that where we would have momentum, but then very quickly give it right back to the other team.”
Having Delp continue to develop on the frontline is a big step for the Temple offense, according to Janney.
“[Delp’s] goals will come, I’m not too worried about that,” Janney said. “I’m more worried about [Delp] learning our plays and strategy as a freshman.”
Next for the Owls will be cross-town rival Drexel. The No. 15 Dragons will be traveling to Temple coming off of a game against Lafayette.
Delp said that a win Sunday would be a big boost for the team.
“It would be huge, [Drexel] is nationally ranked and it would be amazing to beat our next-door neighbor rivals,” Delp said.
But for Janney beating Drexel is more about getting her team out of their current losing slump.
“Beating a team like Drexel, they’re city rivals and their ranked 15th in the nation, would be able to get us back on track,” Janney said. “With a young team, we already proved that we can play with top teams, now we have to prove that we can beat them.”
