Almost 100 students attended the first Temple Student Government meeting of the 2006-2007 academic year Monday afternoon at Kiva Auditorium in Ritter Hall.TSG representatives introduced themselves to members of the 24th general assembly and addressed an increased allocations budget, and new allocations and attendance policies.

“This year, Temple Student Government has a new focus, a new attitude,” said Raysean Hogan, the student body president, during his report. “Our Executive Board that we’ve chosen is spectacular. It’s a great group of student leaders. They’re all proven, you know a lot of them and you’ve seen a lot of their work.”

New allocations chair Eric Stephenson said the 2006-2007 allocations budget is $175,000, a $5,000 increase from the previous year. Registered student organizations can apply for $2,500 per semester or $5,000 for the school year.

Student organizations are required to send a representative to one of two allocations workshops to receive funding from TSG. Allocations workshops will be held Tuesday and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. in room 200 of the Student Center annex.

Each student organization representative is also required to join a TSG committee. Hogan said each committee serves a greater purpose in the everyday operations of the student government.

“Our committees are going to be the main catalyst for what work gets done,” Hogan said.

There is a misconception, Hogan said, that all decisions in TSG are made by himself, vice president of student affairs Juan Galeano and vice president of academic affairs Priya Patel.

“But I can guarantee you that 90 percent of the work is going to come from our committees,” he said.

As of Monday night, positions are still available for intercampus affairs chair, environmental affairs chair and historical affairs chair.

Galeano said it is important for students to communicate with TSG officers.

“You are the ones who voted for us and we need to be held accountable for what we said,” Galeano said. “So when you think of something that we said in our platform, if you notice anything going wrong on campus, or if you have any issues or concerns, please come to us and let us know these things because we are here to work for you.”

The only way TSG can become a stronger organization is from student feedback, Hogan said.

“Our goal this year is to become a first class student organization and I expect each of you hold us to that,” Hogan said. “We’re holding ourselves to that [goal] and it’s something you’re going to see throughout our work and throughout everything we do.”
