Owls defeat Quinnipiac

The men’s team won its ninth consecutive match after defeating Quinnipiac 6-1 on Saturday at Legacy Tennis Center.

The Owls defeated Quinnipiac University 6-1 on Saturday at the Legacy Tennis Center.

Since losing to Belmont University 4-1 on Jan. 16, the Owls have won nine consecutive matches. During the streak, the Owls—who were without senior Santiago Canete because of a sickness—have won 81 percent of their singles and doubles matches.

“Belmont was kind of a fluke loss,” coach Steve Mauro said. “It was a double header. We didn’t play our strongest players against the team. Otherwise, I think we would have won pretty easily.”

Freshmen Florian Mayer, Uladzimir Dorash and Artem Kapshuk are members of the first recruiting class since Kraft has become the Athletic Director.

In doubles, Freshman Florian Mayer and Uladzimir Dorash defeated Kei Ezaka and Kyle Alper 6-4, which improved their record to 8-0 as a duo—the best record on the team.

In singles, Kapshuk—who has a team-best 90 winning percentage—beat Ezka 6-1, 6-1.

Senior Nick Paulus defeated Freddie Zaretsky 6-4, 6-4, while senior Hichman Belkssir defeated Willem van Biezen 6-2, 3-6, 12-10.

With an 11-1 record, Mauro said he didn’t expect his team to start off this hot at the beginning of the season.
