The Philadelphia and Temple police departments are actively seeking the identity of a man who robbed a 21-year-old Temple student the night of Jan. 9.

The robbery occurred at approximately 8:40 p.m. on the 2000 block of North 17th Street, near Norris Street.

“The victim was a Temple student standing near her home on the block,” said Charles Leone, deputy director of Campus Safety Services. “The offender approached the complainant from behind, punched her and took an iPhone without saying anything.”

Following the attack, the suspect ran west on Fontain Street toward 18th Street.

The victim had redness around her eye but did not require medical attention.

In an effort to find the suspect, Philadelphia and Temple police have enhanced patrols in the area. Temple Police are using their special squad of officers in the area of the robbery.

“Those officers are not used for regular patrol, answering service calls and the like,” Leone said. “Instead, they have the opportunity to focus on targeted areas.”

The suspect was described as an African American male, 15-17 years of age, clean shaven, dark complexion, 5 foot, 5 inches. He was last seen wearing a blue ski hat, Leone said.

Temple Police have stopped several males in the area fitting the description but no one has been positively identified as the suspect.

A surveillance video of the male can be viewed through the Philadelphia Police website.
