Dear Editor,

Erik Jacobs recently wrote about The Temple News’ hyped-up support for the DREAM Act. As a foreign-born Latino, I’d like to chime in.

The DREAM Act and its proponents are out of control, clinging to their myopic vision of Utopia, while ignoring the reality of how the world actually functions.

What about my dream?

When my family moved here, legally, from El Salvador, we did so seeking stability, protection from lawlessness and terror. That was our dream. This is why most Latinos seek America. There is no crime in leaving ones native home for the safety of America. It shatters the heart to start life all over again–it is a tough, emotional circumstance to endure.

Many children, whose parents illegally entered, now might have to face that tough, emotional circumstance.

My family has always had respect for the law and its consequences. We faced the same, if not worse, desperation that drives persons to criminally enter America. My mom, when pregnant with me, had to lie on her side for days to not risk taking a bullet to the belly if she slept on her back. Like snakes, my family slithered around the floor of the house to avoid bullets.

Because of political instability, our household had limited food—sugar water and few tortillas for months.

I know extreme desperation, so when DREAM Act proponents call me a race traitor and bigot because I defend the American law that has protected my family for two decades, I am offended.

When U.S. citizens advocate for the DREAM Act, they disregard the importance of controlling illegal immigration, expecting amnesty every couple of decades, becoming part of the problem, not of its solution. This–their definition of compassion–only perpetuates the cycle of illegal entry and DREAM nightmares.  Such irresponsible advocacy weakens the haven that America is for us the legal immigrants.

I don’t presume to know the solution to illegal immigration, but if we are genuinely concerned for the DREAMers, let’s assure that no more persons enter illegally, placing their children in horrible predicaments.  Neither is law the culprit, nor its defenders.

America is the only country I have left, and I refuse to acquiesce to others’ emotional irrationality, forcing upon us the dangers from which immigrants originally fled.

Sincerely,

Alvaro Watson

  1. Watson, I don’t judge you as a traitor or a bigot because we all have our own perspectives on immigration, the goal is to address it instead of throwing around racial comments. But I have to say that I don’t think you are right when you say that Dream Act supporters are out of control. And here are the reasons why:
-The illegal immigration matter has been around for decades with the issue rarely being addressed. So much so that I would say Charlie Sheen has gotten more coverage that illegal immigration has in two decades. Having said this I believe that the issue should be addressed once and for all. Dream Act supporters are trying to achieve this. Little by little progress is being made and attention given to all of us who find ourselves in this limbo of a situation.
-Republicans fear the Dream Act and oppose it because they know what it would mean to have illegal immigrants having the right to voice their opinions. If you were to ask any illegal immigrant which party has taking care of his needs they would promptly answer that the Democrats have long been their supporters. Having said this you can see how Republicans don’t want any extra help given to the Democrats. That’s why both parties prefer to play the waiting game, Republicans stall the integration of immigrants and Democrats play with the Latino vote (the majority who support immigrants).
-There is nothing more for Dream Act supporters to do but to support the Dream Act. You were lucky by having the opportunity of being in this country with papers. Many parents didn’t have that luck and decided to take matters into their own hands. Lawfully wrong, yes. Morally wrong, no.
And here Watson is where it makes all the difference. Throughout history we have struggled against laws that we know go against our morals. Henry David Thoreau very well said that as members of society, nay, as humans, we have the right and the duty to oppose any law we know is wrong. Reason why people helped slaves escape the south, reason why people sheltered Jews in WWII Germany. And the law so far is wrong. People like me are kept in a state of limbo. And this will keep going on until the issue is resolved. So I don’t feel you have betrayed your culture, your roots. To the contrary, I thank you for at least taking a stand in the issue instead of ignoring it. I hope my words made you at least doubt your position.
Enjoy the life you’ve been given by the sacrifices your parents have made. Legally or illegally.

  2. The dream act is wrong.
It’s a way of rewarding people for their illegal acts. It’s for parents who bring their kids to enroll them in the military as soon as they are of age in order to become legal. It’s also for all of those parents that come here to have anchor children, that we pay for by the way. It’s for all of those people that come to the border cities and stay living here after their passports have expired so their children can come to our already overwhelmed school systems. How are the schools supposed to get over no child left behind when we are inundated yearly with more and more children who don’t speak a word of English?
The dream acts steals funds from those who rightfully deserve them because they have parents who have worked and paid taxes all of their lives. Speak up, speak against the dream act.
A person is a[erson, but illegal is just wrong, so is the dream act!

  3. I enjoy reading the comments written in support of the DREAM Act. The entire time the authors correctly identify the target of the DREAM Act as illegal, yet the authors tend to not understand the definition of that word. Illegal means “NOT legal.” The people that would gain citizenship through the DREAM Act are committing a federal offense just being here. The fact that supporters of the act think they have rights is ludicrous. The only right illegal immigrants have is to be promptly deported to wherever they came from. If someone wants to be a citizen of the United States then they must go through the same process our forefathers did and apply for citizenship. If an “immigrant” applies for citizenship and is granted it, Republicans have no problem, because that process follows the law. The key word in my last sentence was “immigrant.” Did you see how I didn’t put “illegal” in front of that term? That is because submitting the proper paperwork and getting it approved is the legal way to enter the country and is perfectly fine. The point is, those people who are here illegally should not be rewarded for being here illegally as that is in direct opposition of the American Justice system.

    Sincerely,

  4. What about the college seats that U.S. citizen children would lose to these Dream Act children. You pro dreamers don’t even think about that. You just pat yourself on the back and say to yourselves that you are doing something good. Guess what – you’re wrong. You do not help one person by hurting someone else. That is not the definition of right. Not in any of the books I have read anyway. This is a situation that they’re parents put them in. It’s unfair that U.S. citizen children, whose parents, in most cases have paid taxes (all) their lives. Not just the 3-5 years that the pro Dreamers are specifying. You guys are making U.S. citizen children pay for the crimes of illegal immigrants. That is vile.

  5. I am a Dreamer. I beg that all of you who oppose our cause continue to do so because it fuels “our” determination.

Our victory will come. It will. You watch.

    Leonardo,
Slavery was wrong, Nazis killing Jews was wrong and despicable also; but you cannot compare these shameful moments in history with laws to control illegal immigration that tell people how to enter the States legally. Every country in the world has immigration laws; I am from El Salvador—American father and Salvadoran mother—and had to be apart from my son until I could bring him here as a legal permanent resident; even though I was American because of my father, my son did not automatically became American. Those were very painful times for us but we knew that we had to come legally to the States. I am sorry about your situation but your parents placed you in these circumstances.

There was a time when I advocated for comprehensive immigration reform but changed my mind when I noticed how it was being used in combination with other issues that have nothing to do with immigration; and that resulted to be just tools for Socialists manipulating Hispanics and other minorities to advance their agendas.

Leonardo, as I said, I am sorry about your situation and I believe that this issue will be resolved when people who come illegally to the States understand and learn to respect the laws of other countries–in this case immigration laws; more people who come here illegally need to realize the consequences that their children will have to face. Americans cannot enter illegally and demand benefits in any other country in the world. One example is what happened in Iran, where two Americans who were lost entered Iran illegally and if I am not mistaken, they are still in jail for it.

“I hope my words made you at least doubt your position.” ~Leonardo

    Reina.
Leonardo, your words does not make one doubt the stand that one chose on controlling illegal immigration; personally, I am sorry that your parent’s choices placed you in this situation and I do not know the answers for these problems. I believe that the countries that have more of their citizens coming illegally to the States, should start educating/informing them about the painful consequences of not respecting the immigration laws of other countries.

Why do some people choose to call the United States a racist nation only because they want to secure their borders and control illegal immigration?

I really hope, that Hispanics who continue to come illegally to the States, will someday realize that they had to leave their countries of origin because they believed the lies and voted for Socialists/Communists who convinced them, that they were fighting for “social justice” and “redistribution of wealth,” which only destroyed the economies of their countries and forced them to come to the States illegally. Capitalism does not have to be destroyed and attacked to help those who have less; it is corruption what needs to be removed.

    Leonardo,
As a parent, my sacrifice was to wait until I could bring my son legally to the States; I was a single mother, I had only studied to the 11th grade, and had no money; the American government through the American Embassy in El Salvador informed me that in order to bring my son legally to the States, first I need to 1) enter legally, 2) find a job, 3) prove that I could support my son and that we would not be a burden for the government. Finally, I saw my son become an American citizen when he was nineteen years old.
I am 50 years old now and finally working on my last two classes to obtain my bachelor degree. It has not been easy and we had to wait to enter legally to the States.

  8. We all have blood running through our veins. We all breathe the same air that surrounds our planet. We all need water and food to survive. We all live to prosper as individuals. Illegal does mean illegal but the law and the system is flaws. Even today new people will cross the border, ge out of boats, overstay ther visas and the government isn’t anything about it.
It is your choIce to keep hiding behind the same word ‘illegal.’ Know that changes are necessary. Slaves won’t stay slaves. The shadows will come to light and everyone will see the flaws of the government.
Down with Republicans! Down with their idiotic views! Let them fend for themselves as animals. Let them be ‘independent’ as the anarchistic animals they want to be. Let them shoot their neighbor. Let them make slaves of themselves! That is the world they envision.

  9. Alex, you are a progressive through and through. A laptop to the orginal plantation masters, the one who backed the KKK. The Democrats. Study their history, and open your eyes. Or keep them closed, while you swallow their propaganda. Nothing is free in this country. God wants man to work and take care of family, but He also wants them to follow their laws. We as a sovereign country have a right to protect ourself and the tax dollars that we and our ancestors have paid. You can keep dreaming of paradise, but remember we were kicked out of the garden of Eden for a purpose. And mankind will “never” be able to create it here on earth, no matter what you progressives loons think. You can damn the Republicans, but you better wake up and know that the Democrats are every bit as bad. Stop kissing the butt of the demoncrats.

Apparently you don’t understand the concepts of which you use to make assertions. Republicans cannot be classified as anarchists for simply wanting to uphold the current laws that govern our society. DREAM Act supporters, who wish to disregard law and disrupt order, would be better described by the term “anarchist.”

  12. Alvaro I agree with you. Everyone needs to take a deep breath and calm down. I think the so called Dream Activists do not realize it is impossible for the USA to take in everyone who wants to come here regardless of whether they are poor peasant farmers or doctors. Our society and economy cannot absorb them any longer. I think some of these dreamers do have one legitimate gripe they never mention. The INS nor ICE did not deport them nor their parents in a timely manner. Half of them came into the country on tourist Visas and never went home. Many of these students have been living in the USA 85% of their lives. For those I am in favor of some form of clemency. I am 46 yrs old and nothing personally invested in this issue. My now dead parents came to IOWA from Cuba as refugees in 1960. I think these Dream Activists often shoot themselves in the foot by demonizing anyone they feel is against them, ICE, Law Enforcement, Federal, State, Local government officials who are worried their just too much immigration both legal and illegal now. A Shame you gave up on EL Salvador. It is my favorite Latin American country and the most promising which explains why the Communists fought tooth and nail for it in the 1980s.

  13. Well, Temple News, I see that many comments that were written after I wrote mime were approved but mine was not approved. I am going to contact different organizations that advocate for freedom of expression and the promotion of different ideas in universities, and inform them of your refusal to approve my reply on your newspaper. Your actions only confirm your bias; should I say, leftist bias?

  14. I have to admit I don’t know ALL of the details of the DREAM ACT. Maybe you guys can fill me in. I feel that if these undocumented students realize they don’t have their SS numbers then there needs to be a way (esp if they are over 18) to streamline the process for them to get one. People need appropriate documentation in this country. That’s just the way it is, I dont have any ill feelings toward them at all. But have to make yourself legal if your parents did not. I bet the immigration process is difficult and that could def use some reforming to not make it so confusing or time consuming (but you are dealing with bureaucracy here! lol) for people to become citizens. They need to be walked through the process, get the papers, and then apply for colleges here. One may not be able to start directly after high school but not everyone does anyway. Whether or not the tuition is in or out of state should depend on how long the parents have been paying tax in that state like the 1st DREAM ACT letter stated (but it should be according to that states residency laws anyway 3 years sounds very short unless that is what that state’s residency law is in the first place). This is a very messy issue and it will leave many feeling like it is unfair (and I kinda think it is toward people who came here in accordance with our laws) but I personally cannot think of any other solution-short of deportation which i don’t think is appropriate in this particular group with these special circumstances.
