Georgetown hands Temple fourth straight loss

Comalli and Sekely drop first doubles match of the season.

The women’s tennis team lost their fourth straight match today at Legacy Tennis Center.

The Owls (1-6, 0-2 Atlantic 10 Conference) fell 4-2 to the Georgetown Hoyas (5-1, 1-0 Big East Conference). The match lasted an unusually long time, over 4 hours.

In doubles, freshman Minami Okajima and sophomore Ama Osei fell 8-5 in the third flight to graduate student Liz Hamlin and freshman Taylor Perz. In the first flight, juniors Jordan Batey and Alicia Doms defeated junior Kelli Comalli and senior Victoria Sekely 9-8 (7). That was Comalli and Sekely’s first loss this season as a doubles combo.

“It was a good win,” coach Steve Mauro said. “They started off slow. They were down 4-1, but they came back.”

Sophomore Rebecca Breland and junior Yana Mavrina fell 9-8 (10) to junior Madeline Jaeger and sophomore Sophie Panarese, giving Georgetown the doubles point.

In the top singles flight, Yana Mavrina had to retire due to sickness after just three games, taking the loss against Sekely. According to Mauro it won’t be a lasting issue.

In the fifth flight, Batey made quick work of Perz, winning 6-0, 6-1. Breland won 7-5, 6-1 against Jaeger in the third flight.

Panarese defeated Osei 7-6 (0), 6-1 in the fourth flight. Okajima lost to Hamlin 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (2), completing the win for the Hoyas. The second flight match, pitting Doms against Comolli, was halted at this point. Doms was winning 7-6 (3), 4-6, 4-3.

“Jordan played really well, and Rebecca also played really well,” Mauro said. “Alicia played a really strong opponent at number two.”

In an exhibition match, junior Carly Bohman lost to senior Michelle Pratt 6-3, 6-3.

The Owls are next in action at Buffalo at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 23.
