Old Dominion completes sweep with 2-0 win

The baseball team has lost four games in a row despite a strong pitching performance from the Peterson brothers.

On Sunday, March 3, Old Dominion (6-3) completed a three-game sweep against Temple (2-6) with a 2-0 win.

Despite a lack of offense from both the Owls and Monarchs, it was a two-run Old Dominion bottom of the sixth that prevailed in the game that provided four hits for each team.

Starting the game for Temple was sophomore pitcher Patrick Peterson, who pitched five innings without giving up any runs.

Like the Monarchs, the Owls too struggled with the opposing pitchers, as junior pitcher Andy Roberts shut down Temple with 5.2 innings pitched, allowing three hits, three walks and two strikeouts.

While the game was scoreless until the sixth inning, the Monarchs began to adjust to the southpaw Peterson in the bottom half of the sixth.

A leadoff walk drawn by junior shortstop Tyler Urps lead to an RBI double from senior designated hitter Andy McGowan, giving the Monarchs the 1-0 lead. Following a sacrifice bunt from junior first baseman Ben Verlander, a Peterson wild pitch allowed McGowan to score, giving Old Dominion the 2-0 lead.

After the sixth inning, Peterson’s day was over. He finished the day with six innings pitched, two earned runs, four hits, one walk, and four strikeouts. Peterson was replaced by his brother, junior pitcher Eric Peterson.

Eric Peterson came into the game and shut down the Old Dominion offense. With two innings pitched, Eric Peterson did not allow a hit or a walk while recording two strikeouts.

The strong pitching performances from the Peterson brothers were not enough for Temple to pull out a win, as Monarchs’ junior pitcher Brad Gero and senior pitcher Brandon Smith sealed the 2-0 win and shutout over the Owls.

In the loss, the Owls recorded four hits, all of which were singles. Freshman catcher Michael D’Acunti recorded two of Temple’s four singles, while sophomore shortstop Nick Lustrino and redshirt-junior right-fielder David Hall each added a single.

With the win, Old Dominion completes the three-game sweep over Temple, while also winning its fourth straight game. With the loss, the Owls lost their fourth straight game, dating back to last weekend’s 8-6 loss to Holy Cross.

Coaches and players were not immediately made available for comment following Sunday’s game.

Temple will have its next opportunity to snap the four game losing streak on Friday, March 8 at 3 p.m. The Owls will face UNC Asheville for a three-game series in Asheville, N.C., spanning from Friday, March 8 through Sunday, March 10.
