Temple hands GW first conference loss

Peterson tosses first complete game in effort.

Entering Saturday in search of its second Atlantic 10 Conference win, Temple (10-12, 2-3 A-10) defeated George Washington (9-17, 4-1 A-10) 3-1 in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, March 30.

Led by a complete game by sophomore starting pitcher Eric Peterson and two extra base hits by senior second baseman Jordan Queja, the Owls were able to hold the Colonials to one lone run in the fifth inning en route to their second conference win of the season and handing George Washington its first conference loss of 2013.

Starting for the Owls on the mound was Eric Peterson, who started his fourth game of the season.

Following two scoreless innings, Temple scored the game’s first runs in the third inning as senior second baseman Jordan Queja tripled down the left field line, scoring junior catcher Andrew Nist who reached base on a leadoff single to left center. The Owls added their second run of the inning as senior third baseman Henry Knabe singled to right field, scoring Queja. Entering the bottom half of the third, Temple led George Washington 2-0.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Peterson surrendered the first and only run of the match-up as a single to left field by senior second baseman Justin Albright scored senior center-fielder Ryan Hickey, reducing the Temple lead to 2-1. After the fifth inning, Peterson did not allow another Colonials hit or run.

The Owls scored the games’ final run in the top of the seventh inning as a Queja’s double and second extra base hit of the afternoon scored junior right-fielder Bobby Heitzman, who reached on a leadoff single through the right side.

Peterson finished his first collegiate complete game with nine innings pitched allowing one run on six hits. The right-handed pitcher recorded one walk and a collegiate career high nine strikeouts on Saturday.

With potential weather in the Washington, D.C. area tomorrow, the Owls will play a doubleheader following the 3-1 win on Saturday rather than playing the game scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
