Women match men’s silver medal

Both track teams leave Roadrunner Invitational with silver medals.

The Temple women were separated from their first win of the season by 1.5 points, and yet the Owls had to settle for the silver medal after finishing as the runner-up of Ramapo University’s Roadrunner Invitational.

The host school took the top spot when all was said and done Saturday with 110.5 points, while the Owls tallied 109.

Jamilah Janneh took the top spot in the triple jump as a freshman with a leap of 12.14 meters, and a key 10 points. Janneh also snagged bronze in the high jump, reaching a top-height of 1.58 meters in the her second Top 3 finish on the day. Janneh also topped her day with a run in the 100-meter dash, finishing at 13.38 seconds and a 32nd-place finish.

Senior sprinter Jade Wilson advanced to the 100 meter hurdles final after a third-place finish in the preliminaries, and then took the silver medal with a second-place mark of 14.32 seconds in the final round. Wilson also qualified for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships with her mark in the final.

Senior Isatta Kenneh, junior Ambrosia Iwugo, senior Dia Dorsey and junior Shanae Bailey provided another highlight on the Owls afternoon with a winning time of 47.64 seconds in the women’s 4×100 meter relay for 10 big points.

Kenneh also set personal-bests in the 100 dash (12.23) and the 200 meter dash at 25.29 seconds. She took second in the preliminary round of the 100, and wound up taking a bronze in the final for six points. Iwugo later set a personal-best in the 100M of her own with a 12.32 mark and a sixth-place finish in the 100 finals.

The Owls yielded 24 total points in the 400-meter dash in sweeping the Top 3 spots. Senior middle-distance runner Tonney Smith took top honors in the event with a career high time of 57.45 seconds. Roberts took the silver with a 59.09 mark, while senior sprinter Tessa West took the bronze, crossing at 59.14 seconds.

Senior sprinter/thrower Jennifer Abercrumbie took fourth in the shot put with a toss of 11.48 meters and later took sixth with a 35-meter hurl in the hammer throw. Abercrumbie totaled a combined 10 points in her afternoon.

Sophomore hurdler Kaitlyn McSurdy swiped a bronze in the 400-meter hurdles with a mark of 1:06.29, while fellow sophomore Michelle Davis-Timothy took fifth in the 800-meter run with a career high mark of 2:20.92.

The Temple women will join the men in splitting up next weekend in meets at George Mason University (Mason Spring Invitational) and the University of Miami (Hurricane Alumni Invitational) on Saturday, April 13.
