Women’s tennis wins third straight

Team is in midst of playing four matches in five days.

The women’s tennis team topped St. Joseph’s 5-2 on a chilly Thursday afternoon at the TU Pavilion.

The Owls (8-12, 3-6 Atlantic 10 Conference) have won three straight and won their final A-10 match. The Hawks fall to 10-10 (0-4 A-10).

“I think we really stepped it up, especially in doubles,” coach Steve Mauro said. “I didn’t think it was going to be as easy of a match, because St. Joe’s is an improving team.”

Junior Alicia Doms defeated senior Casey Robinson 6-4, 6-4 in the first flight. In flight two, junior Jordan Batey fell to sophomore Aurora Davis 6-1, 6-2.

“Alicia Doms played extremely well,” Mauro said. “[Robinson] is a strong player.”

“With this wind, you just have to play smart,” Doms said. “Put the balls in and be consistent. They are a pretty good team, but today’s about being smart, playing smart.”

Junior Yana Mavrina won 6-3, 7-5 against freshman Kristina Eisenbrand in the third flight. In flight four, sophomore Rebecca Breland defeated junior Devi Jadeja 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Freshman Minami Okajima topped sophomore Kelly Mulquin 6-4, 6-1 in the fifth flight. In the sixth flight, junior Carly Bohman fell 1-6, 6-0, 11-9 to sophomore Lauren Roy.

In the top doubles flight, Batey and Doms defeated Davis/Robinson 8-4. Breland and Mavrina triumphed against Eisenbrand and Roy 8-4 in flight two.Okajima and Bohman stormed back from a 6-3 deficit to defeat Jadeja and Mulquin 8-6.

“I was pleasantly surprised with how they fought back and won,” Mauro said. “We had Minami come up to the net more to finish balls. Normally she plays farther back.”

Despite having four matches in a five-day span that began yesterday, Mauro thinks his team has an advantage.

“It definitely makes it easier to play at home because we’re used to the courts,” Mauro said. “It’s a little bit of an adjustment because we don’t play a lot of matches at home, but it’s great seeing the students around and supporting us as well.”

The Owls are next in action against Syracuse on Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m. at the TU Pavilion, weather permitting.
