Youtz provides offense for field hockey

Sophomore Ambert Youtz leads the A-10 in goals and assists.

Summer workouts really do pay off, just ask Amber Youtz. Youtz is a sophomore on the field hockey team who credits her summer workouts to her success this season. Youtz has 11 points, which is more than she did her entire freshman season, through six games.

“I’ve worked on my fitness this entire summer,” Youtz said. “This summer I’ve learned a lot of new skills from high performance that I tried out for and those Olympic players taught you how to improve your skills.”

High performance is a training facility for collegiate and post collegiate field hockey athletes who want to train and improve their skills in the game. Athletes participating tend to be trained by the best coaches across the country as well as current and past Olympic athletes.

“[Youtz] is just a brilliant hockey player and she’s really smart on the ball, she’s creative, and we’re so pleased to have her on our front line,” coach Amanda Janney. “She leads by example, she’s gonna play her heart out and lead by example.”

So far this season, Youtz has four goals and three assists in five games. However, Youtz does not take all the credit, she said a lot of her success comes from her teammates.

“We are working better as a team this year which is helping set up things on offense for the forwards, including myself” Youtz said.  “I also think that this year we play more as a team and it’s easier for me to get better passes and not have to rely on the seniors from last year”.

“This year the pressure is on her a little bit more to create for us and she’s handled that pressure pretty well” Janney said. “Her dribbling skills are outstanding and she just needs to find a way to mix it up, dribbling and passing and creating her own shots.”

Youtz is the current leader in goals and assists in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
