With Valentine’s Day coming up this weekend, people everywhere are scrambling for unique, last minute ideas to surprise their significant other.

This year, the multitude of choices for Valentine’s Day is greater than ever before, providing the opportunity for both partners to enjoy an equally romantic and even humorous time.

The most traditional approach to any romantic holiday is a quiet and elegant dinner, accompanied by a night out on the town. The Spirit of Philadelphia, a cruise ship which runs year-round on the Delaware River, will be offering special Valentine’s packages which include an extravagant three-hour evening of dancing, music, and a candlelit dinner for two. The “Sweetheart Package”, as it is called, comes with a substantial price tag, but is the perfect ticket for a couple looking for a more traditional and relaxed experience. The cold winter weather is clearly here to stay, so to make the best of it, why not try a romantic evening of ice skating with your sweetheart? That’s precisely what the Blue Cross River Rink is offering for Valentine’s Day weekend.

The River Rink, located at Columbus Blvd. and Spring Garden St. (Penn’s Landing), is the perfect setting for a relaxed winter skate with that special someone. Beginning at 6 p.m., the rink will glow red, setting the mood for an enjoyable and romantic evening on ice. Ladies will also receive a red carnation, just in case you forgot the roses.

Radio stations will be at the River Rink all day, with B101, the soft rock favorite, on hand for the first hour of the evening skate. Earlier in the day, the crew from Mix 95.7 will be broadcasting live, entertaining the audience with games and a chance to win great prizes.

If you’re nervous about making a fool of yourself on the ice like many of us, then maybe a romantic movie is the right choice for you. The River Rink will be airing the best new DVD’s of the year, and for Valentine’s Day it’s the romantic comedy Under the Tuscan Sun, starring Diane Lane. It’s also a good idea for a pre- or post-dinner accompaniment, and better yet, it’s free. For more info visit www.riverrink.com.

Numerous other options are available for the couple that wants a unique and exciting way to spend Valentine’s Day. Just look around, and you’re bound to find something that’s right for you.

For the single people out there, Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be so dreadful.

Olde City’s 32 Lounge, located at 16 S. 2nd St, is the perfect place for singles that are ready to mingle. Every guy at the “Cheater’s Ball” will have a “Heart On” as all the ladies will have to try and win each guy’s heart. At the end of the night, the ladies with the most hearts will win cash prizes. Giveaways will also be given to guys who still have their heart on.

Single ladies who are looking for a man need to head over to Main St. in Manayunk for the “Mile of Meet.” Eligible bachelors will line Main St. while women can pick the hottie of their choice. The event will be capped off with a party at Manayunk Brewery and Restaurant where the women can meet up with the man of their dreams. Participants must be 21 and over, but all are welcome to ogle the eligible men. For more info visit www.mileofmeet.com.

With all these choices, there is sure to be something that both couples and singles can enjoy on Valentine’s Day.
