The Owls kicked off their summer practice schedule on Friday as they get ready for their season opener on Sept. 1.

About 10 players wore protective shells on their helmets in the final two weeks of spring practice.

Former linebacker Jeremiah Atoki is DJs during Temple football’s spring practices.

Defensive coordinator Andrew Thacker said Temple’s linebackers have the potential to be one of the best groups in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Sam Franklin Jr. has 23 tackles and three pass breakups at the strong-side linebacker spot.

The team is closer to naming a starter, coach Geoff Collins said.

The redshirt-senior cornerback is one of three starters this season returning to the Owls defensive backfield.

The Owls’ coach said all four quarterbacks competing for the starting spot have taken over scrimmages.

Training camp began on Monday with a media day at Edberg-Olson Hall.

With all four starters returning, the secondary looks to build off of a strong 2014.
