For 10 years while her ex-husband served in the United States Air Force, Ivy traveled throughout North America, briefly living in Maine, California, Mexico and Canada.

“It was a great experience to get to know different cultures,” Ivy said, adding that even her home country had a few pleasant surprises in Limestone, Maine, where she took in the picturesque New England countryside.

But of all the places she traveled, Montreal remains one of her fondest memories.

“They didn’t care what color you were,” Ivy, a black female, said. “They treated you equally no matter who you were.”

“It was better than here,” she added. “Maybe if I ran into a large sum of money, I would [move there].”
