Varsity 8 earns medal in White’s last race

The varsity 8 boat earned a bronze medal at Saturday’s Dad Vail Regatta.

Eight years had gone by since Temple’s varsity 8 boat had earned a medal at the Dad Vail Regatta.

In coach Gavin White’s last race, Temple’s varsity 8 boat gave their coach one final medal.

At Saturday’s Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River, Temple’s varsity 8 boat finished third, earning a medal at the race for the first time since 2008.White announced on Thursday that he would be retiring after the season.

Led by coxswain Dante Romeo, the Owls came through the finish line with a time of 6:05.636. The Florida Institute of Technology and Drexel University finished first and second respectively.

The Owls finished about 10 seconds behind Florida Tech (5:55.410) and seven seconds behind Drexel (5:58.419).

The varsity 8 was one of three boats to make the finals for the Owls. Temple’s lightweight 4 and novice 8 were the two other teams to make the finals. The lightweight 4 placed fifth with a time of 7:38.456.

Temple’s other boats that rowed on the second day of racing at the Dad Vail Regatta were the novice 4, the second varsity 8 and freshman Brendan Mason in the men’s single.
