Women’s soccer loses eighth straight

Temple lost to Rutgers 2-0 in its regular season finale.

In their last regular season game of the year, the Owls were shutout by Rutgers 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in Piscataway, N.J.

“We’re just finding it hard to manufacture goals,” coach Seamus O’Connor said. “The teams we’re playing against [have] defenders that are so athletic. And it comes down to having the individual quality. We haven’t been able to find the right combination on the attacking end of the field yet.”

Following the loss to American Athletic Conference opponent Rutgers (12-4-2, 5-3-1), Temple (6-11-1, 1-8-0) has now lost eight consecutive games which is the programs’ longest losing streak since 2006.

As a team, Temple recorded six shots on the day and three of its shots were on goal. Sophomore midfielder Paige Rachel led the Owls with two shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Shauni Kerkhoff registered four saves.

Rutgers held the shot advantage, recording 21 shots. Forward Stefanie Scholz and defender Erica Skroski netted one goal each. Goalkeeper Jessica Janosz recorded three saves.

In the 36th minute, Skroski scored the game’s first goal on a cross, giving Rutgers a 1-0 lead. The one point Rutgers advantage held for several minutes, until Scholz added to the lead, recording a score in the 80th minute.
