Football player arrested on kidnapping, assault charges

Junior defensive tackle’s bail set at $25,000.

Kamal Johnson, a junior defensive tackle on the football team, was arrested Friday, Oct. 5, on kidnapping charges, among others, in relation to an incident involving his girlfriend late last month.

His 21-year-old girlfriend reported the Sept. 27 incident – in which she alleges she was abused and forced to sit in an apartment on the 1600 block of North 15th Street for hours – on Oct. 4, according to the Philadelphia Police Department.

Johnson turned himself in Oct. 5, a spokeswoman with the police department said. He was arrested and charged with kidnapping for ransom, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person, according to court records. Bail was set at $25,000.

Ray Betzner, assistant vice president of university communications, declined to provide university comment and said any decision to discipline athletically will come from coaches.

Johnson started the first two games of the season for the Owls. He registered seven tackles in three games.

Coach Steve Addazio refused to comment on the matter after the football team’s 37-28 win against South Florida on Saturday.
