Owls lose first game

Temple loses shot battle by double digits as Marshall wins 1-0.

After allowing its first goal of the season late in the first period, Temple fell to Marshall 1-0 in the team’s home opener Friday afternoon.

“I think we just didn’t show up to play today,” senior defender Karly O’Toole said. “I don’t know if it was jitters or being at home for the first time, but we didn’t respond to the awesome win last week [against Loyola Maryland]”.

Temple’s (4-1) loss to Marshall (3-1-1) ended a program record 4-0 start to the season and halted a program record of four consecutive shutouts.

“We play [18] games, we’re bound to have a bad game,” sophomore goalkeeper Shauni Kerkhoff said.

As a team, Temple was outshot 19-4. One of the Owls’ four shots was on goal. Sophomore defender Paula Jurewicz led Temple with two shots and sophomore defender Taylor Trusky shot the Owls’ lone on goal shot.

Sophomore goalkeeper Shauni Kerkhoff registered a season-high eight saves against Marshall but also received her first loss of the year.

For the Thundering Herd, junior forward Myka DeMarco’s 32nd minute goal proved to be enough to secure the victory. DeMarco led Marshall with four shots, three of them being on goal.

Marshall’s junior goalkeeper Lizzie Kish saved Temple’s sole on goal shot, preserving her shutout win.

After 32 minutes of scoreless action, DeMarco broke through the defense on an unassisted goal to give Marshall a 1-0 lead. In the first period, Marshall outshot Temple 8-1.

“We’ve never been behind before and the girls didn’t really know how to react to it,” coach Seamus O’Connor said.

The Thundering Herd continued to attack in the second period, forcing 11 more shots against the Owls’ defense.

Temple found it difficult to hold onto possessions but managed to go on breakaway plays late in the game. Though they shot three times late in the second period, Temple failed to connect on their opportunities.

“Everyone is going to have a bad day at work. It just didn’t click,” O’Connor said.
