Tough greens

Philmont Country Club proves difficult for golf team.

The golf team struggled to conquer Philmont Country Club Saturday afternoon, lucky for them so did every other team in the field, as players were overheard saying, “this is playing like a US open course.”

Head coach Brian Quinn was very upset with the way his team played during the first round of the Big 5 Invitational, but said with his team being in striking distance you just have to look forward to tomorrow.

“The win is in striking distance, the conditions were very difficult and the greens were almost unfair with how fast they were,” Quinn said. “I was disappointed in the way we played, as a team we were 10-over par on the last three holes as a team, if we erase half of those strokes we have a one shot lead.”

The Owls, who sit in sixth place overall, were led Saturday by senior Devin Bibeau who played a consistent round of 75. Bibeau was followed by freshman Brandon Matthews who found himself in trouble and scrambling to save par or bogey on every hole. Rounding out Temple’s top four were junior Matt Crescenzo with a score of 77 and junior Russell Hartung with an 82. Quinn said his team made some questionable decisions and even beat themselves at times.

“I think Brandon and Matt tried too hard today, they just need to take it one shot at a time and play their games,” Quinn said. “All of our players need to step up tomorrow, especially Paul Carbone, we need him to play well.”

On Sunday Temple will look to chase down Sacred Heart, Yale, Villanova, Connecticut and Princeton who are each within 4 shots of one another.
