This summer brought many bored youth into air-conditioned theaters across the country. Unfortunately, they may have been shelling out their cash for nothing but relief from the sweltering heat.

Movies this summer were far from the well-crafted masterpieces of the past. It is unknown the kind of uneducated and easily amused audiences Hollywood’s directors and producers were aiming to entertain.

The cheesy teenage movies of the summer did not live up to their predecessors. Road Trip, starring the ever so offensive Tom Green, is simply not that funny. The Tom Green shtick is getting old. How many times can one person stick foreign objects into their mouth?

The other actors in the movie are simply sidekicks to Green’s overdone insanity. They don’t even do the stereotypical partying college student bit well. Road Trip is exactly like Revenge of the Nerds but nowhere near as entertaining.

Scary Movie is just as ridiculous. Starring two of the Wayans brothers, who could easily have been replaced by any of the other Wayans brothers, and a half-naked Carmen Electra, this movie was an insult to American teenagers.

Sure, there were a few amusing parts that poked fun at the new horror genre, but these did not make up for the lack of a real story line. The film was also filled with numerous ridiculous sex jokes and drug related situations. Apparently, these are the only elements needed in a movie to bring in the money of the under-twenty-five crowd.

The thrillers of the summer weren’t exactly thrilling either. Hollow Man was an utter disappointment. After Kevin Bacon’s outstanding performances in such films as Sleepers and Murder in the First one would expect him to pick films with a better script than Hollow Man.

This film has about fifteen minutes of excitement, all of which had been depicted in its previews. There is an undeniable need for more scenes in which the invisible doctor creates havoc. In addition the story line is incredibly predictable and never leaves the viewer guessing. All in all, Hollow Man is far from an edge of your seat nail-biter.

How about Me, Myself, and Irene? This movie was yet another summer loser. Jim Carey’s performance is far from amusing. Carey has proven himself as a talented dramatic actor through recent rolls in Man on the Moon and The Truman Show.

His physical comedy in Me, Myself, and Irene does not live up to his previous stunts in such classics as The Mask and Ace Ventura Pet Detective. His roll as the last place winner with the split personality is not as funny as it could have been. The schizophrenic routine quickly irritates. Overall, this film is another disappointment.

After a summer of horrible movies one would hope that fall brings amusing new films as frequently as it does fallen leaves. Perhaps the film industry will rethink its plans, as most of these summer films were less-than-successful at the box office. Until then, there’s always the video store.
