Philadelphia is a city rich with culture.

On any given day, one can choose from a performance by the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Kimmel Center, a visiting Broadway show at Merriam Theater or a modern art exhibit at the Philadelphia Art Museum.

With all these options, it’s easy to overlook the smaller treasures that lay in our own backyard.

Temple University showcases honored artists and exceptional students alike in their galleries at Main Campus, Tyler’s Elkins Park campus, and Center City.

Philadelphia artists and critics recognize the Temple Gallery in Old City as one of the leading venues for contemporary art.

After escaping Tibet in 1959, the Venerable Losang Samten grew up in Dharmasala, India studying at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts.

After receiving his Master of Buddhist Sutra and Tantra degree, Samten decided to travel to the United States to display the Tibetan meditative art of sand painting.

This month’s exhibit, the “Wheel of Life,” is designed to explain the nature of life and how it follows a cyclical path.

“Sipay Khorlo,” as it is called in Tibetan, is being displayed at the Temple Gallery till Oct. 3.

The Temple Gallery, located at 45 N. 2nd St., is open from Wednesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

From Center City to Elkins Park, the Penrose Gallery on Tyler’s campus is home to student-run exhibition programs that draw both professional and student artists into the area. Washington D.C.-based Decatur Blue will showcase “Space Invaders” through Sept. 27.

The seven-artist group is using “Space Invaders” as a working studio as well as an exhibition.

After moving away from their stationary studio, the group tries to tie in individual art work with a nomadic lifestyle and portray these opposites in their displays.

The Penrose Gallery, 7225 Penrose Ave,, is open from Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
