For Temple students who have grown up in or around the Philadelphia area, choosing a neighborhood to live in is an easy decision. While many students live in South Philly or areas closer to Center City, these neighborhoods can be too costly.
Germantown, nestled in the city’s Northwest corner, is the perfect home for a student on a tight budget.
This historic neighborhood played host to Revolutionary War battles and continues to preserve many historic sites.
A variety of influences come together to make Germantown one of the most complex neighborhoods in the city. The sections can range from affluent to middle class to run-down and dangerous.
Unlike some of the other neighborhoods of Philadelphia, Germantown boasts an abundance of older apartment buildings built prior to 1950.
A decent studio apartment is only $300 a month, while a one-bedroom runs in the $400-$450 range.
With bars, restaurants and stores lining Chelten and Germantown Avenues, there is always something to do in the area. In terms of culture and nightlife, Center City is only a short distance away.
Public transportation is easily accessible, with both the R7 and R8 lines stopping throughout Germantown. Buses connect to the Broad Street Subway, bringing your commute time to less than half an hour.
Parking is always readily available in Germantown. Driving to campus further reduces the morning commute to only ten minutes.
Germantown is the perfect blend of metropolitan and suburban living with numerous parks and lots of open spaces. For the student who is looking for an affordable and fun place to live, Germantown is a perfect fit.
