“Bueller?……. Bueller?…….Anyone?”
“Um, he’s sick. My best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with a girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it’s pretty serious.”
For those beginning to feel the stresses of school setting in with spring, perhaps what you need is a day off. And though it’s no longer necessary to fool your parents into thinking you’re sick in order to stay home, Ferris Bueller would have been the perfect guy to help you do the trick!
In the 1986 film properly titled Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, a high school student named Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) with a bad case of “senioritis” decides to take a day off for himself. After creating an elaborate scheme to trick his parents into thinking he’s too sick to attend school, Ferris must convince his anxiety-ridden friend Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck), to join him on his day off. Oh yeah – and to “borrow” Cameron’s father’s 1961 Ferrari. After finally persuading him, Ferris and Cameron head to school, but not to go to class; to pick up Ferris’ girlfriend Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara).
The trio hit up the streets of Chicago while Principal Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones) sets out to try and prove that Ferris is pulling a fast one on him. While the mischievous principal snoops around the Buellers’ house, Ferris and his friends are off sight-seeing. After visiting the Art Institute of Chicago, Wrigley Field, the Sears Tower and lunch at a high class restaurant, Ferris decides to top off their trip by sneaking onto a parade float.
As Ferris and friends finish their day by cooling down in a pool, they rush home after suddenly realizing Ferris’ parents will be home soon. After dashing the obstacle courses of neighbors’ back yards, Ferris arrives home just in time for his parents to check on his health.
Although Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is about a student who skips school and menaces Chicago for a day, there is a moral, believe it or not. Enjoy life and don’t let the worries of work get to you. Sometimes we just need a day off.
