“USED: New Work from Old Things,” the Painted Bride Art Center’s latest exhibit, promises to show visitors a new way at looking at ordinary objects. From April 2 through May 22, seven artists will display art created from ordinary objects such as magazines, clothing and even bowling balls.
“The exhibition is great for those who normally wouldn’t come to an art gallery,” said Painted Bride’s Hamida King. “It’s unpretentious and really fun.”
What can you expect to see at this exhibition? The collection of Jerry Goodman, a Philadelphia artist, was created from pornography. The 75-year-old admits that pornography has molested him his whole life. By drawing over images, he said it is his turn to “molest the porn.”
New York artist Margo Mensing punched thousand of circles in security envelopes to depict tourist attractions. Her work represents how attractions such as Mount Rushmore are simultaneously predictable, protected and vulnerable.
Other displays include Brian Marshall’s collection created from items found in salvage and flea markets, Richard Metz’s art painted on the backs of men’s suits and Alex Queral’s sculptures created from phone books to create individuality from anonymity.
Shelley Spector is the curator for “USED.” She is a Philadelphia artist who is best known for her eclectic work.
“Using materials that have a previous history gives the work a multitude of meanings,” Spector said of the exhibit. “It offers a built in reference point that doesn’t come with a blank canvas or a mound of clay. By reinventing and redefining, these artists make common into personal and make old into new.”
