Temple’s own student-run radio station, W.H.I.P., will be holding their first Battle of the Bands on April 27 in the Owl Cove, found in Mitten Hall. Doors open at 7 p.m, with the first band hitting the stage at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are needed for admission, with advance tickets on sale for $7 at the W.H.I.P. office, room 207 in the Student Center, or through any of the bands performing at the show. Tickets will also be sold at the door for $10.
Thirty bands submitted demos, and of those bands, W.H.I.P. chose just 15 acts to perform. Because of scheduling problems, only 14 of the bands were able to confirm their appearances at this year’s competition.
The bands chosen will cover an extensive range of musical genres, from hardcore to hip-hop, to progressive rock and more. With such an eclectic mix of styles being represented, fans of almost any type of music will be able to walk away feeling satisfied. Aileen Scott, the W.H.I.P. member responsible for organizing and promoting the event, said the large and diverse lineup is a true representation of the extensive mix of cultures and of the diverse campus life found at Temple.
“We have been neglecting many of Temple’s students,” Scott said, referring to the station’s tendency to concentrate on hip-hop-related events. “This event will expand W.H.I.P.’s diversity in the eyes of the students…and we are anticipating this event to be one of W.H.I.P.’s largest.”
Bands will be judged on stage presence, lyrics, musical timing and overall sound. First prize is a $150 gift certificate to Sam Ash and eight hours of free recording time at the Music Training Center. The second place band will receive a $75 gift certificate to Sam Ash and two hours of recording time at the Music Training Center.
The bands chosen to perform at this year’s competition include: Dirty Larry, The Emphasis, Orphans, A Trunk Full of Dead Bodies, Absolutely!, Chromelodeon, Mini Band, Desoto Jones, Fat City Reprise, Jeff Says No, Things Fall Apart and more.
