It was a promising start on Sunday, the final day of competition, as two Owls remained in action in the consolation round of the Cissie Leary Invitational.
Seniors Carly Bohman and Yana Mavrina closed out the tournament with their singles matches. After a hard fought tiebreaker, Marvina fell short of the title in the consolation bracket. In the first set, Mavrina lost to a score of 6-4 to her opponent Marie Bedard from Penn State. Mavrina then won the second set pushing the match to a tiebreaker where Mavrina fell short in a 10-5 decision.
“The match could have gone either way,” coach Steve Mauro said. “This is their first tournament of the season, if this was played a week later then Yana could have won.”
Bohman also took to the court in the consolation-consolation round, going head to head with Delaware’s Abby Martinez. Bohman lost in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (1) in the semifinal round match.
“Carly needs to work on her serve,” Mauro said. “She defaulted too many times but as the season goes on she will improve and get better.”
Also on Sunday, four other Owls competed in bonus matches that were not a part of the tournament. Junior Rebecca Breland, senior Alicia Doms and freshman Anais Nussaume all battled players from Cornell and emerged as winners. Breland was victorious against Kyla Kutnick, 6-0, 6-3. Doms also defeated Kutnck’s teammate, Sara Perelman, in a 6-0, 6-1 decision only dropping one game. Nussaume won with 7-5, 6-0 scores to get past Lauren Frazier. Sophomore Minami Okajima won against her opponent Caroline Harpainter from Akron in a 6-3, 6-3 decision.
“The girls performed well,” Mauro said. “Cornell has always been a top program so the girls worked hard and did really well today.”
The women will be focusing on conditioning this week according to Mauro.
